I love going to out to shoot photos of the BSH. The architure of the buildings is fantastic. My husband and I are avid researchers and have quite a notebook of things about the hospital. Now I'm trying to get a copy of the application that is on the Historic Register to see who applied and other info. Also I have to wonder how much taxes are paid each year on the place. Guess I'll have to hit Peoria City Hall for that info. Love to chat with anyone about it.

The man's name who took the pictures is Rob Connover, a local ghost hunter from Pekin, IL. I live in Bartonville, and my husband grew up running through the buildings, so I know quite a bit about it. There are a lot of sites you can go to to find info, just type it into a search engine. www.praireghosts.com is a good one

Are there records of the patients in Bartonville? I had a family member there and want to know how long he was there and cause of death. There is also confusion of the injury that landed him there. Where do I look?

BSH falling apart | ||

Has anyone noticed lately all the holes in the roof? I'm always afraid the roof will end up caving in and the insides will collapse.
Also, when between Jan. and now did they tear out the back steps and the little room built under the grounds next to the steps?? And WHY on earth would they do that?? |

Satatic, I tried to open your photos and they aren't showing up. Are they still posted? I'd love to see some of the other people's photos that are interested in BSH.

Bartonville Hospital update
|
I see there is a for sale sign that has been put up on the land between the Bowen Building and the brick building on the west side that is now a lodge. Anyone know what's going on there? Are they just selling the lot or the Bowen Bldg?
Also - anyone notice that on the road behind Bowen, that the small underground room has been demolished along with the steps leading up to the buildings?? |

BSH Cemetary | ||
|
Okay I have seens pics on the internet of the cemetary by the hospital. But where the heck are they?! We have spent two days trying to find them and have found nothing. We walked through the woods for an hour and drove around trying to find it. I was told to walk straight into the woods from the hospital and it's right there. But alas, we can't find it. My friend and I love cemetaries and don't want to impose any harm. We just want to see it. Any help?

This is really driving me crazy, but the last post I see on this thread is 2/19 but there were posts in April and also June. I've had 4 other friends go to this thread and they all have the same problem - the new posts after 2/19 are not visible.

Patient list from old Bartonville Mental Hospital
|
I, too, have a relative who was a patient at the Bartonville Hospital. Can anyone tell me how to locate a patient list or how to find a particular grave there?
I Will be in Peoria in July and would love to visit the place. Is it easy to get onto the grounds? Am I likely to be arrested? I appreciate any info I can get. I grew up in Peoria, but have been away for many years. Presently residing in Tucson, Arizona. |

Tucson Janice, I have a book put out by the historical society and it's called Forgotten Residence of Bartonville State Hospital. In the back it lists the names and grave numbers of people buried there. If you'd like to email me who you're looking for I'd be happy to look it up and see if they're listed.

They tore out the little cave-like building right after the ground thawed this year...they were worried about cave-ins.
The main cemetery is actually across the street from the hospital. There is a road right across the street from the front entrance...go to almost the very end. There is a dirt road, right before you get to the last business on your left. Follow the dirt road to it's end and you'll come to a "Road Closed" sign...the cemetery is right beyond that sign. This is the cemetery that the Bookbinder story involves. A very sad and lonely place. There is another, in the woods. A small one, from what I can remember. That whole area is built over and around cemeteries. All of the businesses buildings are former Asylum buildings. Kind of puts things in perspective. I have quite a few pics of the grounds and cemetery...if anyone wants to swap picks, email me at ilovepara@excite.com. ![]() |
