bartonville state hospital
|
i've been reading everybody's posts and have been enjoying it very much. i grew up two blocks from the state hospital. it was always a very spooky place until i became a teenager and my friends and i started exploring the place when it was totally off limits. and even then, it was a lil spooky. when the state hospital was sold in 1980, my friend and i contacted the owner and gained access to the hospital to do a study for school. this was when the asylum and all of its buildings were still intact. it was like a ghost town. it looked as if people just left with the clothes that they had on their backs. all the buildings still contained all the beds and medical equipment from eight years prior, when it closed. it was by far the most surreal thing i have ever witnessed. even though zeller was an innovator in treating the medically insane, it still seemed to have a haunting feeling about it. it was especially haunting whenever we would visit the official zeller building with the long hallway in the basement leading to the morgue. that was not a place i liked to go. in closing, my friend and i didnt get to explore the hospital grounds for long before they started to renovate the whole thing into some business/industrial park. many of the buildings were torn down and that place will never be the same. it will never have that same haunting and desolate feeling.

BSH info. | ||

I actually walked through the building the other day for the first time. My father-in-law owns it and I asked
him to take us on a tour. It is very dangerous to be going through. There are floors rotting in it, there is asbestos everywhere, and it has been trashed to the extreme, unfortunately. If you have an eye for remodeling, the building could be just gorgeous inside. We came up with many ideas for the building, but the cost, just to clean it up to code and restore would just be a fortune. To answer some questions, yes, it is watched very closely by police and is illegal to go into because of the danger one would be exposed to as a result of the condition of the hospital. I would love to have anyone's stories on patients or goings on at the hospital. Stay tuned for some upcoming information on the hospital. Bartonville state hospital for sale!!
|
We are putting the state hospital up for sale on Ebay. If it wasn't so expensive to restore, we would love to do it.
Just to get all of the asbestos out of the building would cost one over $100,000. Then to restore it would be 1.5-2 million dollars depending on how one decided to approach the project. If there are any interested parties in purchasing the hospital, contact me for more details. michellerpalmer@palmercompanies.com Michelle Palmer |

Re: Patient list from old Bartonville Mental Hospital

I am wanting some information on Bartonville State Hospital - hope you can help me. Was there an orphanage on the grounds of the hospital? I have an aunt who will be 100 years of age on Nov. 13 and she worked at the hospital but I believe she worked in the orphanage as a cook. Can you provide any information about the orphanage?

i am interested to read after having read many of the articles that george zeller supposedly used no restraints...funny, as i have visited the place out of scholarly curiosity before i was finally caught by the cops and slapped with a $180 fine for criminal trespassing...underneath the building lay a network of tunnels...including many cages for the more "unruly," as well as manacles,...don't those count as restraints? having been diagnosed with a severe mental illness 4 years ago (borderline personality disorder) and having been fighting it ever since with 7 medications, i am shocked and appalled...i would like to be granted permission to further investigate the grounds of this hospital legally so that i may gather information and write an essay about this. had i lived earlier, this could have been me, and i am eager tolear more about it...i am curious to know others thoughts about this and if others were aware of this also.

my boyfriend and i just went and visited the old mental hospital and the 4 cemetaries in bartonville tonight 10-25-03 and you cannot get into the hospitol anymore because of all the lower windows bein sheeted shut unless of course you take some tools and damage the locks etc. which we did not do for all we wanted to do was just look around. the 4 cemetaries were in fair cond. we did see that the old crying elm tree has recently fallen down but still lies there. however we did not see any ghosts,spirits, or hear any odd noises at all which was somewhat of a dissapointment to us.will do plan to return again.

Buying BSH | ||
|
My fiance may buy the Bartonville State Hospital from the current owner who he knows. He wants to rebuild it and open it to the public as a museum or something. The place can't be torn down because of the extreme amount of asbestos in there. Hes planning on getting a liscence in asbestos removal and removing it himself, which would save costs.
I wanted any information that you have on this place. Like what they did to patients, etc. Please email me at stephanieanne85@hotpop.com, please put in the subject "Info on BSH. Thank you! |

i couldn't find it??? | ||
|
I went to go look for that dirt road and i couldn't find it at all. There is nothing anywhere we just went the other day and we look all around that area and there isn't a cemetery back there..so i was wondering if the street it was on is Constitution or Becker cause we didn't know if the road that you are talking about is still there or if it is a different road, Because the road that is in front on the entrance doesn't lead to anything or is across Pfeiffer or what streets did exists back then? I would really appreciate it if you could help us find it because we are really intrested in that kind of stuff. Thank you
