Re: me too | ||

If anyone has any photos online I would love to see them. A friend of mine just got back and showed us some of his pics. He got a lot of pics with these perfectly circular spider web looking things. He's going back in tomorrow for more. There was a lot of drawings and pictures done by the patients in one room and he wants to see if he can get more photos. Lots of eerie noises and weird shadows.

Dixmont photo shoot | ||
|
I would like to know the name/phone number of the person who owns Dixmont. Our group has already been in there for a photo shoot, with the owner's permission, and would like to get in for a daytime shoot before everything is torn down. It's such a shame that everything is in such disrepair, but for the most part, 75% of it is still rock solid.

Dixmont experience | ||
|
Hi, my name is Kurt Threlfall, and I'm very interested in your project about Dixmont. I'm replying with a story of one of my own experiences at the abandoned hospital. I had gone to Dixmont for the first time with my friend Justin Lecuyer, on July 4th, 2002. Now that I think about it, we were very lucky not to get caught, because I just parked on the side of the road, taking a back entrance up (which was more like a path). We went through the main gate very cautiously, and found a way in through a doorway, which seemed to lead to a main hallway. As we began exploring and looking into the different room, a loud thud sounded on the next floor. That's all it took for our hearts to start racing, but I perhaps thought that it was the wind. As we kept cautiously exploring, a second louder thud, followed shortly by a third, came from upstairs. By this time, we'd had enough, and we ran down the rest of the hallway. The most bizarre thing was that the thudding became louder and more frequent. As we jumped out the opposite doorway, hesitating on what to do, we ran back around to the front entrance, and we could still hear the thudding. To me, it was horrifying. There was still so much left to explore, but I was afraid of getting busted, so we went quickly back to my car. That was the most horrifying experience I have ever had, and I hope it brings an interest to you!
I know a little bit about the history of Dixmont, so if you want to contact me at IdolThreats12@aol.com, we can tell what we know. |

Dixmont Hospital, interesting place! | ||
|
Worked as a guard at Dixmont Hospital from 1988-1990, about 4 years or so after the hospital closed. However, I have many wonderful pics of the hospital bldgs and a report of the hospital i found in a hidden tunnel in reed hall that was dated in the area of 1926 i believe. Also have 2 nice pics of the stained glass windows that hung in the chapel of reed hall (pre-fire) and a pic of the chapel itself with it's brilliant red carpet. Funny, but not much of a ghost or spirit believer, but when one sits on the steps of reed hall on a midnight shift or walks between reed and dietary at 3 AM when all is quiet, one can hear many unexplainable things. Anyway, i will miss the place and still think of it fondly. Not many people know this, but in 1989 i think(?) a hollywood production crew spent the weekend in reed hall checking lighting and production capabilities for a movie that was to begin filming in pittsburgh with Jodie Foster. I am sure everyone has heard of silence of the lambs, but not sure many people know that reed hall was being considered for hannibal's asylum ward. I believe George Romero was interested at one time in filming some scenes to one of his movies there. Well, enjoyed reading the posts as it made me think of the place as fondly as i always have.

Thanks for all of your comments about Dixmont. My husband and I hold a special interest in Dixmont because while doing family history,I discovered that my husband's great-grandfather was a patient in Dixmont for 56 years! I've tried to find old records, and was told Mayview had them all and I wrote to them and they said all they had was an admission card. After 56 years? I know there's more somewhere! Anyway...we are making the trip to Pittsburgh this weekend (before they make it a Wal-mart) and am hoping to get pictures of the outside. Is it close enough to the road to get a shot? Will the guards let us get closer if we ask? Does anyone have pictures they are willing to share? Or information? I already bought a video and can't wait to receive that. My email address is buckelvis@hotmail.com and my name is Sherri. Thanks! Any information from anyone would be immensely appreciated.

So what if the property is vacant? There is plenty of property avaiable for purchase. I see no reason for why corporations want to purchase the properties that contian abandoend asylums, it would be easier to purchase a piece of farm land and develop that. Someday when there are no arcitecturaly interesting buildings left, and everythign is boreing and square, you will realize that these buildings shoudl not have been demolished.

Dixmont Hospital | ||

I heard about the demise just recently on KDKA TV about Dixmont Hospital. I have done research on my family and found that my great-great-great grandmother was a resident at Dixmont from November 1877 to January 1879 or until her death. She is not buried there. To substantiate this, I found papers in our local Court House stating she was a lunatic and was wasting away her property. These statements were given by six men from the local area. It is sad as she had nine living children at the time.
I thought Dixmont had been torn down some time ago. Do you know when it will be torn down? I would like to get some photos of the building where she once lived, if only from the outside. |

To continue the story of my g-g-g-grandmother who lived at Dixmont from November 1877 to January 1879 --
The testimony of six "good and lawful men" from the local area, as the court papers state, - gave testimony that "she was buying things of no use to her and giving them away." Is that so bad? Even though she had nine children living at the time, apparently they could not or would not help her. In the court papers, it states the cost of attendance and boarding her for those 62 weeks was $5 a week. That is a total of $310. In addition to that charge, there was a "Ten Times Trouble Expense" of $435. How bad could she have been to have been charged double? She was not buried at Dixmont but in her own hometown, over an hour's drive from Pittsburgh. How did they transport her to and from Dixmont? I don't know. Would someone still have personnel records of the residents from 1877-78-79? Or perhaps a photo? |

Re: Dixmont Hospital | ||

hillie is my b/f. We talked to a few people who have been up there. Althought it is a shame to see a historic place go away, the building are so far beyond repair there is NO POSSIBILITY of restoring anything that is of a historic nature. One building was renovated and is now apartments, but that may be all that is salvageable. And if the owners of the property can make money from it, then more power to them, because they have to be losing bundles of money owning the property right now.

dixmont cemetary | ||
|
Does anyone know where the Dixmont cemetary is located? Seems my husbands great, great grandfather was sent to Dixmont in the early days, 1888, for murdering his father in law. We have tried to find out how he died, but the state of PA will not divulge that information. We are trying to at least find out where he is buried, as he died while at Dixmont. Is there a map of the cemetary or a listing of who is buried where? This information would be extremely helpful.

Thank you | ||

You have been able to do something in one day that has taken us month to find out through the state. We have been looking for the gravesite of my husband's great, great grandfather who died at Dixmont in 1891. The state only told us that he died there, but would give us no indication of cause of death, or where he was buried. Thank you for at least solvind half of the mystery.
Now do you know if there is a map of the cemetary so we could find his grave, or are the in numerical order? Also, if we are traveling west on the PA turnpike, could you give me directions to Dixmont? Thanks. You have been more than helpful. |

PLEASE don't go to dixmont! I have a cancerous cyst-like mass on my throat, so do 2 other people who went to dixmont all those times with me. My doctor says she's only seen this type cyst in people exposed to asbestos. There is a sign there (actually, a few) that say "Caution: asbestos" and you'll notice the construction workers all wearing masks. So if you go, take caution. But that place is crawling with asbestos.
