bin there a few times and love it. can't wait to come home.

I got caught in Dixmont just last week with some friends. Got a stiff fine from the local police and got my car towed. I have been there a few times last year without any problems, but it seems like they're really cutting down on trespassers. We came in from the boulevard end of the property, so I have no idea how they knew we were there. They must have some sort of sensor or camera at that end of the property. By the way-when we got caught, we were surrounded-we tried to run, but they had spotlights on us...oh well. I guess I won't be going there anymore....Also, another friend of mine from school said he recently tried to get in, but got caught as well. He said there was a truck hiding in the weeds that caught him.

My family owns the dixmont hospital property, and we DO NOT give permission for anyone to be on the property. The buildings are not safe to be in or around, which is the reason for the no trespassing signs. Please do not start rumors that we give permission for people to enter the property.

I understand where you're coming from, but the NUMBER ONE reason we don't allow kids to trespass on the property is that the DEP requires us to keep all windows on the buildings sealed up so that asbestos does not get out of them. Kids come in and break all of the windows, which is a pain because we then have to patch them over again. The DEP will hand us stiff fines if the windows are not kept sealed. This and liability reasons if one is hurt-considering the buildings are crumbling down- are some reasons why we strictly enforce the No Trespassing signs around te property.

Yes, if someone would go there and be hurt, it would be their own fault. But they could still sue the owners of the property, and even if they lost the suit it would cost the property owner in the way of legal fees. Let us not forget a recent court case in New York, were a burglar stealing things from a house tripped over a crack in the sidewalk outside the house, fell and broke his leg. He was arrested, and put on probation, then sued the property owner because of the sidewalk being improperly maintained and won a very large settlement. Stupid I know, but in our litigous society, it happens.

The current owner is also probably losing at least $25K per month in property taxes on the site, as well as the pain of DEP inspections.

Also I didn't see anywhere that hillie posted that YOU said anything about tumors, I think he was just trying to say that you may not immediately show any signs of ill effects from the asbestos exposure.

No matter what it all comes down to the fact that the site is now private property, and if the owners do not wish for people to be there, then it is trespassing. Simple as that. I'm not trying to flame, i just think things are being taken the wrong way, from what I've read.

As for any place needing a Wal-Mart, I don't know, nor do I care. But from what I've read, and from what I've heard from people who had seen the site even a few years ago, not recently, not much of what is up there is salvageable, so there is no real sense in leaving it there when it costs the owners a lot of money, and is a huge liability problem. Yes these are money matters, and it sucks that money makes the world go around, but that's they way the world works. If I were financially able I would buy it and lots of other places to preserve them, but it's not feasible or even possible in some cases. I don't know of anyone besides Bill Gates who could afford to pay 3/4 of a million dollars for a property, and then still afford to let it sit and cost them tens of thousands of dollars a month to just sit there useless. It's would be like bleeding to death, slowly going broke. I don't like it any more than you do, but progress happens for the betterment, or sometimes in spite of the needs of the community.

One part of the hospital has been preserved and is now a school, and several things from the hospital were donated by the current property owners to museums, where they are being preserved. The current owners are much more interested in the helping the community and have a track record of doing things for the community, and being all round great people. Despite what some say, new businesses in the area will better the community. The property covers a huge portion of Kilbuck Township, which limits the size of their tax base. Businesses in the area may even help to lower taxes for the residents as the township will get more money coming in from the individual businesses.

I personally know the owners so i don't have that fear. And i haven't goten the runs from eating dairy products after going in the tunnels so i am good on that part. Anyways Dixmont is a place to be little scared and have a little adventure! and honestly b94 is full of their own @#%$!

i see your point..and i undestand exactly what you said..it's just misconceptions that left me wondering and confused..and a little angry..i mean i really hate to think about it not being there..it's such an awesome place..just makes me sad
