Decaying Manteno Mental Hospital - ILLINOIS

I think they are tearing it down. The cemetery is now labeled as the veteran's hospital cemetery. I'm not going to say where it is because I want to respect the departed and not encourage urban explorers to gawk at it. But it is nowhere near where the buildings or new houses are. Manteno was closed in 1984, partly because of a general deinstitutionalization movement, partly because of budget cuts and partly because of politics. Then-Gov. Thompson was from Chicago and he saw to it that mental health jobs were kept in the Chicago area.

Put it this way, i know somebody who was a patient there. i know all the stories. I have explored a few of the buildings and seen some weird things. I could write about Manteno all day but i wont. But, many patients were treated poorly there.

But this building ws not just a morgue. It iwas much more just a hospital building where they did surgery and stuff, the morgue was in teh basement. Most of the houses are built over where there used to be small cotages, but ther are a few houses built right ontop of where the "morgue" (Bowen Hospital) used to be. And don't believe everything you hear, the real facts about the place are in books at manteno library. Show all the good they did there and how much of a asset this place used to be.

Not saying that i don't believe in that, because anythings possible, but I just have never witnessed it. Ive been there daytime and nighttime to.

Well there was a building north-west of what is now homestar bank(To the right of the building when driving in where a few homes now are), it was called Bowen Hospital, much like most hospitals, it contianed a morgue in the basement. Proof... Go to manteno library, after walking in the front doors, go left and along the outside wall on the bottom shelf there will be large books, about the size of a fully opened newspaper folding in half. They say on them Manteno State Hospital. Read those, that is all the proof you will need. The big square one thay just finished demolishing ("Singer"), that was just a treatment center, it didnt have a morgue. Posts: 0 (05/03/02 15:26:01) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I just want to say,only we who been in camarillo knows the hell.You don't get well in a place like that.Let me tell you.If you have a little sense your going to used it to get the hell out of there.In the kids ward back in the leat 60's they would have use kid's sing song like.If you miss the train Im on,You will know that I have gone.Lord Im five hundred miles a way from home.And where have all the flowes gone.Sad songs.Well to me they where.I was alrady home sick.The hold time I was there I was depress.When I got out,I still had them dispress felling,and still do.Friends dont be ashame about you beening in a mental hospital.That dont mean we crazy.See back in the 60's anyone could put you away.Many people was there,very flew should had been there.Now days,what sent me there,a child would'nt go to day.I gotten lied on by the head man at my school.And another thing when I wed I had put that behind me.I did'nt thank to tell my husband before he wed'ed me.I just did'nt thank to.But four weeks leater,I though to do so.But he told me,my step father had alrady told him.That was my place to do that.But what Im trying to say is.Tell the person.If you want somebody will be happy to tell them for you.

I have heard it mentionsed in this post many times and i donno what its got to do wtih Manteno State Hospital. I looked threw the maps and there is no ward named camarillo, so i donno whats going on.

Does anyone know how I can find info that prooves this? Reply: I visited the cemetery about five years ago. I went to the security guards (at a building that was situated near the boundry between the old hospital and the Veterans home.) I asked the security man where the cemetery was, and he told us to follow him. We drove down a gravel road, perhaps a half mile away from the hospital, and the security guard opened the gates to the cemetery. We noted flat concrete gravemarkers, with age and name. Many of the dead were quite young, in their 30's and early 40's. There was a separate section of the cemetery that was for veterans. You cannot enter the cemetery without the seucurity person opening the very high gates/fence that surrounds it. The persons buried in the cemetery most likely suffered terribly before their deaths. There are far more hospital patients buried there than veterans. Most old state hospitals had a cemetery or burial grounds on the property. There were many deaths due to the "treatments" of the "mentally ill". Many died in the tubs, from insulin shock and ECT. If you read the history of mental hospitals, such treatments as "rat bite fever" were given to "cure" the "mentally ill." These treatments were not from the 1800's, but used widely in the 20th century. ECT is still given to over 100,000 persons in the US every year.

What's sad, beyond dying as the result of treatments or health complications, is having your final resting place in a mental hospital cemetery, instead of loved ones claiming you and bringing you back home. At least Manteno had names on the stones instead of numbers

Was this once a state facility? Contact PAI (Protection & Advocacy Inc.), let them know. They may be able to help get the records saved. Is there a cemetery there? Most State run asylums had a crematorium & cemetery. The treatment of those unfortunate enough to die while in the hands of our government was less than human in some cases. Listen to those who are speaking of the painful memories of being in these places. We need to remember their stories... they are what will help stop this from ever happening again. Stockton, CA has a State hospital site.. there were at least 3 & possibably 4 burial sites, both on and off the grounds. Sad. Marge Campbell, Coordinator for San Joaquin, CA Saving Graves.

I searched through all of the buildings I could, but when I reached one of the rooms with records in them, all the records were gone but the folders that kept them. If you have my grandmother's records, I don't care, but my family wants them. It's for kids who either have been raped or otherwise sexually abused. I think they may also have programs to bring sexually aggressive kids under control. They do serious work there.
