The cemetery is now labeled as the veteran's hospital cemetery. I'm not going to say where it is because I want to respect the departed and not encourage urban explorers to gawk at it. But it is nowhere near where the buildings or new houses are.
Manteno was closed in 1984, partly because of a general deinstitutionalization movement, partly because of budget cuts and partly because of politics. Then-Gov. Thompson was from Chicago and he saw to it that mental health jobs were kept in the Chicago area.
