Manteno State Hospital | ||

To Maria, Saddly I can't find anyother stories like this. Though I know there has to be more than just one. The Date and News paper is in my last post if anyone is interested in reading the story in its entirety. It could probably be found on Micro Fische at the Chicago Library. More than likely the main branch. To Static, Trudeau was mostly vacant. Though In an Interview in April with a Dr. That worked there briefly in the 60's I was told that it was used as a segregation ward, so to speak. Where it housed African American Employes. I can't say weather there is truth to it or not. Like I said, its hard to get straight stories on the Hospital. Later, In the early 80s it was owned by A college, I don't remember which one off hand. But as far as I know, it was not really used all that Much. As far as Brandon, they may have gutted it on the move, Im not sure. But before it was torn down, Singer, a two story building that Housed Schizophrenics and was used as a recovery/medical ward, had cages blocking off exit on all but the main stair well from the second floor. This was also the building that had the Morgue in the Basement. It was torn down this past spring or summer. The actual Morgue Building though, was Bowen. Torn down in '98. I do have alot of pictures of Singer, and alot of the other buildings, but I have no scanner. I will see what I can do about getting the pictures on the web though.

I never saw a morgue in the basement(s) of singer.. but there was so many of them i probably just missed it. Have you seen the flat area where the power house used to be? Thats horrable. I wonder how much we paid for that to be demolished. There is a website that you may like to contact about any pictures you may have to.. www.themantenoproject.org . They are trying to find employees, patients, and even people that have explored to contribute. Trudeau was so massive, from the satelite photo from 98 that i have it looks interesting. Also i have a copy of a map from 84 that I use on my site (www.il-x.cjb.net) that states it was owned by University of Illinois. Do you know if the college used the building? I plan to explore Brandon again soon to.. kinda weird how its the only building on the verterans property that is still in the state that it was abandoned in.

Im actually Partially Involved with the Manteno Project, in a little more time, when I've gathered a little more Information Im going to Hopefully have my own space on there. And I actually watched them begin tearing down the Power house. And yes it was awful. I was inside it last summer. It was a fantastic building. Its a shame they're removing the buildings. I believe the Removed the Morgue from the Singer Building. I recieved the Information about the Morgue from an ex-employee.

I've been there many times. Last time I was there cops were circling the place and ground security was shinning there flash lights everywhere. After a night of exploring I got pulled over by two cops and almost got arrested for traspassing but the cops where cool. the police said the ground security saw us. I'm sure this place wasn't cool to live in but it is cool to explore it's too bad it's being torn down! Every thing at the asylum is crazy! Has any one seen the room in one of the tunnels that has shelves of big jars of white powder? many white jars with no lable! It did not look like any baking supply at all.
Who knows what really went on at this place? In one of the doorms there was an iron board with a shirt and iron on it, it looks like moved out very fastly! this place was easy to get into Know it seems like everythig is boarded up! |

Jim.....Because you cannot "see" or "feel" the here-after or its echos leads you to say what you do. Not being attuned leads people to be non believers.
It's too bad. If only you could see or better yet feel the sorrow of those little kids there .....it's quite sad. |

www.themantenoproject.org , www.il-x.cjb.net , www.chicagourbanexploration.com , and the public library in manteno has a folder containing information. Also they have "year" books located on the bottom shelf to the left of the entrance that contain information from the 1970s. Just ask the librarians if you need help.

MSH Information?? | ||

Satatic, Im impressed by the amount of information you know about msh, i have a question for you. I'm thinking of taking another visit there soon. The last time I was there was about three or four years ago. So, I was wondering just how many buildings are still standing and able to enter. Also, are there still artifacts left, or have people pretty much taken all the interesting stuff??

On the map on www.il-x.cjb.net the buildings are color coded by which are still abandoned, which are demolished, and which are renovated. The only building that really still has stuff in it is teh Mechanical Shop, mainly just junk though. There are wheel chairs but they are on state property. The map is current as of last time I was there in January I think. Who knows though, more buildings might be gone.

i saw a little bit of your websit before the cpu started @#%$ up, it was awesome. you have some really good pictures in there. i live in illinois, where do you live and where is manteno? i live in decatur illinois 45 min from champaign and 36 min from springfield. i have a big fascination with hospitals, i dont quite know why. i have been admitted alot of times it alot of different places and i have been threated to be sent to state hospitals, but never went thank god, i have heard alot of @#%$ about places like those. ever heard of mcfarland zone hospital in springfield? the state hospital was in decatur (adolf meyer) but now it is a womens prison. im presently on ssi (social security income) because the government says im unfit to work. my diagnosis is major depression, generalized anxiety disorder and borderline personality disorder. ive been miss diagnosed several times, ive been on any medicince you have ever heard of, i have been over drugged and wasnt even able to keep my eyes open for 3 days, i have been through alot of different hospitals bullshit and i know how they work. if you ever come down into the central illinois area, look me up, i would love to visit and see some of these abandoned sites. but what i most want to know from you is why you are so into asylums? you have family or someone close locked away, or have you yourself been admitted? i was admitted once or twice cause i wanted to be, but the rest i didnt want to be. if you would write me back and answer my questions and tell me about yourself and experiences, that would be really cool. its not every day that i find people that are interested in asylums like i am, everyone thinks im crazy for that, kind of ironic huh? my email adress is spcl_k_77@msn.com and my names liane. id really like to hear from you.

Great, I just typed up my long story about visiting tonigt and had to click back to fill in all fields, it's gone now.
Summing it up because it's 3am.. Not worth it, one abandoned building that I discovered left, tons of new office buildings. We thought there was an abandoned building or two inside the Veteran's grounds. Hopped the no tresspassing fence. Big mistake. An hour of running, ducking and hiding out around the neighborhood from cops, we get the phone call from our lookout. He's been discovered by our cars and we have 5 min. to get back there or our cars are towed and we are going to jail. Just some "don't @#%$ come back here" warnings and we were on our way. I was very disappointed that there was nothing other than a graffitied up building left standing. It was only a thirty minute trip south though. |

I have been inside when I was in high school. From what we saw when we got inside it seemed like we stepped into another world. In one of the buildings there were beds strewn out in the hallways. The buildings are delapitated on the inside. In one place we saw what could have been a dentist's chair or a chair where they got hair cuts. There are tunnels undernieth the campus. My fiance has been in them but by the time I started dating him most of the buildings that they used to get down there have been tore down to build houses. It also has a morge. I didn't get to see that either but my fiance has. There is too much security at that particular building so it would be hard to get in. I haven't been there in about 4 years so I don't know how many buildings are left or how much security is there now. There is a abandoned house on the proberty that is really creepy. The whole place is creepy! I can't believe they are building houses on that proberty. I wouldn't live there. Those mental residents back in the day were abused and killed!!

I have been in the buildings on the grounds. I never got to go in the morge. My fiance has. He has some creepy stories. There are also tunnels under the grounds. He has been there but by the time I started dating him all the buildings that he used to get to the tunnels were demolished to build houses. I would never live next to or on this campus. The buildings inside are in major disrepair. It's probebly not a good idea for anyone to go inside. We never partied or harmed the buildings in any way. It was just tipical boring nights in Kankakee County. We were bored and were facinated with all the old relics we ran into in the buildings. It's like walking into a sad past. There is a grave yard but they took all of the headstones out. If you don't know where the grave yard is you'll never find it. We looked and we didn't find it. I talked to a friend of mine and she knows exactly where it is.
